Self-Management Programme

The IBS Network's Self Management Programme is the only comprehensive interactive programme for the managment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome available in the UK. It consists of twelve modules that have been adapted for individual study or used as a resource for Self Help Groups.

Navigating around The Self Management Programme couldn't be easier, we've laid it out as modules that are divided into units. Each module deals with a specific subject about Irritable Bowel Syndrome and each unit explains the module in more depth.

This is a fully comprehensive course in understanding and managing your IBS. It is supported by relevant factsheets

The course consists of 12 modules and can be conducted sequentially or used as an resource for advice and information as required. It includes exercises that help you to understand and manage your IBS better.

There is quite a lot of information to absorb before you can begin to manage your IBS, but the more informed you are, the more confident you become. So the first five modules deal with how the gut works, the nature of IBS, what causes it and the role of diet and stress. Then the next section describes what you can do to manage your diet, to deal with what happens, to contain your emotions and to manage life with IBS. And the final section described what health professionals and complementary therapies can do to help you.

You can work through the programme at your own rate, following any interesting leads, but at the end of each period of work, we would recommend you take care of your IBS with a short session of bowel directed relaxation.

If there are any terms you don't understand in either the Self Management Programme or the fact sheets, we've also provided a glossary to explain them in more detail.

The Self Management Plan was compiled and written on behalf of The IBS Network by Professor Nick Read.
