Dietitian or Nutritionist?

If you would like one-to-one support for your IBS, should you see a dietitian or a nutritionist? This is a question we are often asked.

Choosing the right person to seek help and advice from can sometimes be a confusing task. Many people claim to be experts in nutrition yet have very limited knowledge and offer no protection to the public.

Dietitians are the only nutrition professionals to be regulated by law and are governed by an ethical code to ensure that they always work to the highest standard.

This page explains the differences between the roles and functions of dietitians, nutritionists and nutritional therapists.Dietitian or nutritionist? | British Dietetic Association (BDA)

People with IBS often find eating triggers their symptoms. It’s often difficult to identify what component, if any, of the meal may be responsible.

In many cases, it just may be the act of eating, the context of the meal, what it represents or just eating in a rush that is upsetting the gut.
