The Functional Gut Clinic is the UK’s only independent UKAS accredited GI Physiology service. Our core interest is to use state of the art technology to try and understand how the gut is functioning and to identify what is causing troublesome symptoms.

The information that we gain helps identify problems with gut function and in turn this helps to develop a targeted therapeutic strategy based on the best available scientific evidence.

In addition to diagnostics, we now provide support services such as dietetics and bowel re-training therapy to assist in patient treatment.

The Functional Gut Clinic is the only independent UKAS accredited GI Physiology service in the UK guaranteeing that the service we offer is of the highest standard and constantly improving.

Patient Investigations & Services

Functional Gut Disorders

Gastro-oesophageal reflux Disease

Can be caused by hiatal hernia, poor oesophageal motility, gastroparesis and behavioural issues such asaerophagia and rumination. Additionally, laryngopharyngeal reflux can also cause troublesome issues in the throat, respiratory tract and with the voice.

We can objectively test all these possibilities with our ranges of tests and specialist pH probes to provide a comprehensive evaluation of reflux disease, essential if anti-reflux surgery is being considered. Where behavioral issues are evident, we use biofeedback techniques to help patients reduce these issues.

Irritable bowel syndrome and dyspepsia

These conditions can coexist and overlap drastically reducing patients quality of life.

We use a combination of hydrogen and methane breath testing and gut motility testing, such as SmartPill and Gastric Emptying studies, to find out the underlying causes of the patients symptoms helping to design effective treatment strategies.

Faecal Incontinence

Is a distressing and life affecting condition which can be caused by structural injury after childbirth, general muscle weakness,

hyper or hypo-sensitivity, dysbiosis or dietary sensitivities.

Again we can use a combination of tests and treatments (such as biofeedback) to help identify and improve symptoms in this group of patients.

Swallowing disorders (dysphagia)

Not being able to swallow effectively drastically effects quality of life and ability to thrive. We use the smallest but most sophisticated oesophageal manometry and impedance catheter to assess motility and bolus clearance to understand the main causes of dysphagia, which helps to decide on the most appropriate treatment.

Constipation and evacuation Disorders

These issues can be caused by gut motility problems, dysbiosis, structural problems such as rectoceles, or behavioural issues such as dyssynergia. We can objectively test each possibility with our range of physiology and imaging tools and provide support with biofeedback and dietetics.
